- Follows simple directions. Can your child listen to the directions a leader can show off and complete the task.
- Sits still. Does your child have the attention span to sit still? This does not have to be for a long period of time but should be at least for a few minutes.
- Uses the restroom. To start kindergarten your child should be well potty trained. They should be able to ask to go to the bathroom
- Recognizes some letters. So in Kindergarten your child will learn his or her letters but to start the year with the ability to read some letters of the alphabet.
- Works on fine and gross motor skills. Can your child run, jump, throw and catch a ball? Has your child had the opportunity to hold a pencil and practice writing or a pair of scissors to cut?
- Gets along with peers. It is true that many things that we learn in kindergarten we will carry through life and this includes getting along with others, sharing, and playing together.
- Handles emotions. Crying is normal but having a tantrum is not really the best..
- Shows an interest in learning. Does your child show interest in learning new things, try to follow along as a demonstration is going on.

Here, our kids need to know the alphabet before they can get into kindergarten. They also have to be able to write their first name and know their shapes & colors.
ReplyDeleteHere the kids don't even need to know English to go to kindergarten... when I was a kid I had to be able to write my name and tie my shoes. We are working on getting the youngest "ready" but she is soooo ready if we waited any longer it would have been painful.
ReplyDeleteI homeschool my kiddos and they were all ready for kindergarten!

ReplyDeleteWe shall see. We start on Tuesday! EEK
ReplyDeleteMy son was academically ready, but he wasn't overly confident in his work, always feeling a bit behind (he turned five the day of cut off). He passed but we opted to hold him back and it was a wonderful decision. He did amazing the next year in every way and now is always a bit ahead. :)

ReplyDeleteWe are keeping our son in preschool for an extra year then moving to Kindergarten. I think it really does depend on the child.
