Old Fasioned Sugar Cookies

1 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
4 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp salt
Extra granulated sugar for rolling

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Thoroughly cream butter, oil, and both sugars. Add vanilla and eggs. Sift dry ingredients. Stir and blend dry mixture into wet mixture. Roll about 1 tsp of dough into ball, then roll in extra sugar in small dish. Press down on lightly greased cookie sheet with a glass tumbler dipped in sugar. Repeat for remaining dough. Bake about 12 minutes or until just starting to turn golden at edges. Makes 8 dozen.
My Notes:
Be very careful when packing these cookies; the lightest touch will reduce them to crumbs. I would not recommend shipping them at all.
