cataract awareness

They say our eyes are the windows to our world. Through them we can see where we are and envision where we want to go. When we struggle with eye sight our vision becomes cloudy and distorts the way we see. Cataracts cause a clouding of the lens of the eye and prevents the passage of light into the eye
More than 24 million Americans age 40 and older suffer with cataracts. Thus making the subject of cataracts a theme that deserves much awareness.

At a certain age many realize that they need to have their eyes checked for cataracts Cataracts affect more than just adults. Children and young adults can have cataract of the eye as well. Risk factors of younger individuals getting cataracts include:

  •  Intense heat or long-term exposure to UV rays from the sun
  •  Certain diseases, such as diabetes
  •  Inflammation in the eye
  •  Hereditary influences
  •  Events before birth, such as German measles in the mother
  •  Long-term steroid use
  •  Severe long-term nearsightedness (myopia)
  •  Eye injuries
  •  Eye diseases
  •  Smoking

Cataracts are common and many may get it but the good thing is that the cure is fairly simple. The solution to cataracts is surgery. The surgeon will remove the lens that has deteriorated and replace it with an artificial lens. Each year millions of Americans will undergo cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries in the U.S. Within 30 minutes the surgery is over and most individuals can resume normal activities fairly quickly

To prevent age related cataract of the eye one should
  • avoid smoking
  • reduce exposure to U.V. rays
  • eating healthy foods
  • wearing proper eye protection
