pecan pie a southern favorite

Pecan pie is made up of pecan nuts, eggs, butter, and sugar or corn syrup. Other ingredients may include molasses, maple syrup, or honey. The pie is considered a Southern favorite and is often served topped with whip cream, vanilla ice cream or hard sauce. It would be rude of me after making it sound so tempting not to share a piece with you. Go ahead enjoy yourself.

Pecans are native to the southern part of the U.S. Evidence has been found indicating that Native Americans used pecans in the area now known as Texas more than 8,000 years ago. In fact, the term pecan comes from a mixture of Algonquin and pakani meaning several nuts.

Sugar type pies were made in Medieval Europe and later adapted to North America where different ingredients were available. What resulted was a great variety of pies such as shoofly pie, sugar pie, butter tart and chess pie. My inlaws loved this type of pie and made them often. Pecan pies may be a simple variant of a chess pie.

The French setting in New Orleans have also been given credit for the pecan pie. The Quinipissa and Tangipahos tribes introduced the French tradesmen to the pecans. Others have claimed that pecan pie was in existence in the early 1800s in Alabama but no matter where the dish comes from the firs printed recipe appears to have been in the Harper's Bazaar in 1886.

One of the best known ingredients that helped  bring the pie to popularity was Karo syrup. The syrup company claimed that it was a "new use for corn syrup" This claim is not true as pecan pie was made before the invention of corn syrup as older recipes call for darker sugar based syrup or molasses.

And that's home you know
Sweet tea, pecan pie and homemade wine
