BLT tea sandwiches

July 22nd offers a chance to be more aware of BLT sandwiches. One of my favorite sandwiches made with bacon, lettuce and tomato. Perfect for a full meal or a little bit. Often served on toast or soft white bread the BLT is a great way to have a meal on the go.

The Bacon Lettuce and Tomato sandwich is one of the most popular sandwiches in the United States. The BLT is made up of several strips of cooked bacon, lettuce leaves and slices of tomato all served on 2 slices of bread. Top it all off with a dab of mayo and you have a very tasty sandwich.

During the Victorian era between 1930 and 1950 tea sandwiches became very popular. Cookbooks would list cheese as an ingredient in the little sandwiches. World War II brought around many changes including changes to the super market. Ingredients that never before could be kept and sold year round now had the capability. Many diners sold the bacon lettuce and tomato sandwich and most likely diner language is how the sandwich became popular under the letters BLT.

Thick cut smoked bacon, cooked
Soft green lettuce
Mayo
White bread, lightly toasted
Plum tomatoes, sliced
Toothpicks or wooden skewers

All you need to do:
Cut the crusts off the bread (as close to the crust as possible).
Spread mayo on one side of the bread.
Cut the bread into quarters... then layer lettuce tomato and a small piece if bacon on a quarter.  Place another quarter on top (mayo side down and secure it by pushing a toothpick through it.
